Time for a Change

Joe Shulter is a native of San Antonio. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School. He then attended the University of Texas at Austin and returned to San Antonio to attend St. Mary’s University School of Law.

He has been a consumer debtor bankruptcy attorney since 1987. He is one of only approximately 150 attorneys in the State of Texas who are board certified as experts in consumer bankruptcy law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

Mr. Shulter has represented thousands of clients over the years and has been the principal attorney in several published opinions that have shaped consumer bankruptcy law. Mr. Shulter also regularly writes and speaks at advanced consumer bankruptcy seminars in Texas.

Mr. Shulter is pleased to be married to the former Cheryl L. Senchesen. Cherie is a Licensed Professional Counselor in private practice specializing in post-traumatic stress disorder and trauma resolution. They enjoy .45 ACP target shooting and will soon reside on their ranch in Frio County where they will be raising registered Black Angus grass-fed cattle. (And fighting feral hogs!)

  • Mr. Shulter was so comforting. He told me not to worry and explained some of the questions that were going to be asked. He stood by me and walked me into the creditor’s meeting so I could see how it works.

  • Mr. Shulter helped me immensely in every way he could. I had to file bankruptcy because my husband passed away in 2010 leaving me so many bills and no life insurance as he was a handicapped Viet Nam warrior in bad shape physically.

  • Our bankruptcy was a combination of commercial and personal issues. Mr. Shulter was extremely knowledgeable on Texas bankruptcy law and held our hands throughout the process. I would use him again on any issue in which he was qualified in a heartbeat and I have recommended him several times.

  • Thank you for helping me through my bankruptcy, which was extremely stressful to me. I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your compassion and thoughtfulness. I will always be grateful to you.

  • Dear Mr. Shulter:

How can I begin to thank you for all you have done for me? Your genuine caring, your compassion, and your professionalism are to be admired and certainly should be emulated by all. As we went to court, you calmed my nerves with your quiet and confident demeanor. Your encouragement truly boosted my morale! With all your cases, with all the detailed paperwork, you still make time to answer any of my questions and return my calls, and for that I am extraordinarily grateful.

Again, I want to thank you for everything you have done for me. You have not only relieved my stress but you have, more importantly, given me back my life. Your reassuring words and optimism always give me hope, therefore I am and always will be extremely thankful.

  • Shortly after my divorce I was laid off from the company I worked for. I found a new job quickly, but was able to earn only about half as much as I did before. I could not afford an attorney to request a change in my child support and going through the attorney general’s office takes a very long time. The amount of child support deducted from my paycheck did not leave me with enough to pay my other bills, and I fell further and further behind. Then I found out that my employer was not even withholding the entire child support amount each paycheck, so I was behind on that, too. I took a second job for a while, even though it prevented me from having time to spend with my daughter. The bills continued to pile up. Then I got hurt at work which resulted in time off work and a lot of medical bills. The final straw was when my apartment complex notified me that when my lease renewed my rent would be going up. I was afraid I would become homeless. A friend of mine referred me to Joe Shulter for a bankruptcy. My case was complicated because some of my debts were not to actual credit card companies but to my exwife in our divorce. Joe had experience with cases like mine and handled it with ease. My exwife made an objection to the confirmation of my bankruptcy and threatened me with legal action and jail time. She thought I had fallen behind on child support on purpose. Joe assured me there was nothing to worry about. He argued my case at the creditor’s meeting, discovered a fraudulent argument was being made, threatened the other attorney with sanctions, got the objection withdrawn, and had my case confirmed. Now that the case is confirmed, he is always there when I have questions or need to be reassured. I trust him completely. I don’t know where I would be without his help.

  • Dear Mr. Shulter, Not very often do clients get to tell their lawyer THANK YOU. At our first appointment, I could hear you walking down the hall and the closer you got the more scared I got. My husband and I were both ashamed for having to file bankruptcy, but we knew we had to protect ourselves due to our ages and our health. You were a huge help the day of the creditor’s meeting. You took my hand and said “Don’t worry—these are the questions they will be asking you both,” and then prepared us for the meeting. We went inside and I finally felt a little better. It was so nice of you to come over and say “Are you okay” afterward. Thanks for everything!

  • I would like to thank attorney Joseph Shulter for going above and beyond to help me concerning my bankruptcy. I have a traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic pain, anxiety and short-term memory loss that all make it difficult for me to function, especially during stressful situations. Mr. Shulter was so patient with me and took a lot of time to explain things and listen to my concerns during this very difficult process. I am extremely grateful for all the time and effort he has given to my case. He never makes me feel like I am burdening him or bothering him when I call with questions or concerns. He always lets me know that he understands my need for reassurance and he relieves my stress concerning all of the obstacles that we have been facing with regards to this bankruptcy and my unique situation. I am very anxious about all that we are going through and Mr. Shulter made every effort to help me get through this and try to relieve my anxiety. I am so very thankful. His expertise, kindness, patience, and understanding have truly helped me.

  • I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the help I received from Mr. Shulter. I feel so blessed that he was handling my case. I highly recommend him for any legal work in the future.

  • Mr. Shulter will definitely do what is right in making sure justice is served in all clients’ best interest.

  • I was employed as a teacher in a rural school district that paid the state minimum teacher salary, and I had a lot of credit card debt that had accumulated over time. The school district where I worked was a long drive from Mr. Shulter’s office, so he scheduled an evening appointment for me at so I wouldn’t have to miss work. After getting lost and arriving late for the appointment, I was emotionally drained. I started crying. Mr. Shulter was incredibly patient and understanding. We explored whether chapter 13 or chapter 7 was the better option for me and once we determined that I needed a chapter 7, he quoted me a price that was very reasonable. (I have since spoken with others who have filed bankruptcy and heard they paid much more for much less service.) Mr. Shulter was with me through the entire process and after, even though I filed a chapter 7. He didn’t simply collect the fees, file the case, and forget me. When my car insurance company cancelled my policy due to my credit rating, I called him after hours and he talked me through options, promised to take care of it first thing in the morning the next business day, and he kept his word, even though the bankruptcy had already been discharged and he owed me nothing. Mr. Shulter is available by cell phone in emergencies; he doesn’t just keep regular office hours! If you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of having to file a bankruptcy, you will be best represented by Joe Shulter. He is an exceptional attorney and an exceptional human being. You will not be disappointed.
